What we do
Teen Driver is a research and referral service for parents of newly licensed drivers. We publish guidance on what adding a teen costs, which discounts a household qualifies for, how much coverage genuinely protects a family, and what each state requires.
When a family wants to act on that, we connect them with a licensed independent insurance agent in their state who works with teen drivers regularly. We are not an insurer and not an insurance agency. We do not quote, sell, bind, modify, or cancel coverage, and we do not receive commissions on policies.
Our editorial standards
Everything published here follows a fixed set of rules, enforced automatically before the site builds:
- Every statistic carries a citation to its source, with the date it was retrieved. Content stating a figure without a source fails our build and cannot publish.
- State law data — licensing ages, supervised-hour requirements, night and passenger restrictions, minimum liability limits — is sourced from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, state insurance departments, and published state law, and each state page lists its sources.
- When sources conflict, we withhold the page rather than pick one. Hawaii was withheld from this site until we confirmed its current limits against the Hawai’i Insurance Division directly.
- We never promise a price, a discount amount, or approval, and we do not claim to offer the cheapest coverage. Our position is that the right coverage at the best available value beats the lowest premium.
- We do not name a specific carrier’s rates unless citing a published filing.
Our review and correction process
Guidance touching coverage adequacy, policy mechanics, or state requirements is reviewed by J. Robert Smith, a licensed insurance agent, before publication. His credentials and public license number are listed above, and pages show the date they were last reviewed.
Insurance law and rates change. If you find something outdated or wrong, tell us and we will correct it and note the correction. Accuracy complaints are the ones we act on fastest.
How we make money
We are compensated by the independent insurance agencies we refer families to. That compensation is for the introduction and does not depend on whether you buy a policy, which policy you buy, or what it costs.
You never pay us anything. Read the full compensation disclosure for the detail, including what that arrangement means for the guidance you read here.
